    • John W. McBurney Sr.

John W. McBurney Sr. was born in Ireland, the son of John McBurney and Mary E. (Francis) McBurney. The family immigrated to the U.S. when John W. Sr. was six months old. In the 1850 census, both McBurney families lived next to the other in Mercer County, Delaware township, Pennsylvania. John W. Sr. (age 23) was living with his wife, Martha J. (McKean) - age 22 and their one month old daughter Mary E. The senior McBurneys included John (72), Mary (62), Jane (27) and James (26), all born in Ireland. In the 1860 census, John W. Sr. and his brother James and their families lived near each other in Mercer County, PA. John W. Sr. and Martha were then 33 and lived with their children Mary E. (10), Jane (8), Sarah (5) and John (1). In the 1880 census, the John McBurney Sr. family was living in Wyoming Township, Jones County, Iowa and included John W. Sr. (53), Martha J. (51), Sadie M. (24), John W. Jr. (21) and Kate C. (19). His wife and children were all born in Pennsylvania.

Obituary Wyoming Journal, Jones Co., IA, March 10, 1904

Mr. John McBurney was born October 15th, 1824, in the north of Ireland, of Scotch parentage, and died March 6th, 1904, at 10:00 o'clock A.M., at the age of 79 years, 7 months and 9 days. Mr. McBurney came with his parents to America when only six months old and settled in Mercer county, Pa. Here he grew to manhood and on August 31st, 1848, he was married to Miss Martha McKean who departed this life on Nov. 7th, 1893, for her home above. To this union were born nine children, of whom four are now dead. Those remaining to mourn the loss of both father and mother are: Mrs. W.C. Paul, Mrs. W.H. McKean, Mrs. Ross Bohler, Mrs. W.P. Coburn, and Mr. John W. McBurney. Mr. McBurney came to Jones County, Iowa, near the town of Onslow, about the year 1868, where he resided up to the time of his death. Mr. McBurney early in life professed his faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and united with the Cumberland Presbyterian church of which he was a member until the organization of the Presbyterian church at Onslow, after which he united with the church at Onslow. He remained a faithful and consistent member of the church until his death, when he was called to enter the church triumphant. Mr. McBurney's death was a beautiful illustration of the triumph of divine grace. His departure was characterized more by joy and gladness at the thought of the meetings beyond than by grief at leaving dear ones behind. He was truly like a ripened sheaf waiting to be gardened.

    • (Research):According to an Ancestry tree, John had a sister Ann, born abt 1825 (died en route to America), Jane, born 1823 died 5 Sep 1881 in Wyoming, Iowa; brother Thomas, born abt 1819, died 29 Dec 1873 in Ireland (this isn't very likely since John immigrated in 1825, so why would a brother 5 yrs older be left in Ireland? Or perhaps he went back?

Also according to this tree, his mother was Mary Frances Murray (1788-1867) who died in Mercer County, PA and father John McBurney Sr (1778-1867) who died in Jackson Twp, Mercer County, PA.
