• Notes

  (Research):John T. East was a blacksmith by trade although he did try his hand prospecting for gold in California with his father. He lived in Castana for many years. When hard times struck and he lost his land holdings in the early 1890's, he moved his family to Hornick and lived only a short block from the Methodist Church which he helped to start. Shortly after the 1900 census, he moved his family again to Modesto, CA where his wife had family. He set up his blacksmith shop about ten miles west of Modesto.
